AGREEMENT

 

THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION

 

(hereinafter called <<UNESCO>>)

AND

THE WORLD ISLAMIC CALL SOCIETY

 

 

(hereinafter called <<the Society>>)

Whereas the Director-General is authorized to receive funds from Members States and international, regional or national Organizations for the purpose of carrying out certain activities which are consistent with the aims, politics and activities of the Organization.

Therefore the Society and UNESCO hereby agree to co-operate as follows:

 

Culture

The two sides confirm their intention to continue the execution of the standing projects already covered by the Geneva Agreement which was ratified on 27 February 1996. In this context, the Society confirms its commitment as to the following:

  1. To pay the funds foreseen for the History projects mentioned in the above-mentioned Agreement.

  2. To continue to meet all the costs relating to the Work on the Various Aspects of Islamic Culture during the coming biennium (1998-1999).

  3. To transfer to UNESCO the following sums:

$250,000 for the above-mentioned Work;

$50,000 for Volume IV of the History of Central Asia

$ 30,000 to cover the budgetary deficit of Volume IV of the History of Humanity.

The Society agrees to allocate $150,000 for conserving and restoring cultural monuments in Central Asia, the African Sahel, Bosnia and Albania.

Culture of Peace

It is agreed that the Society will allocate $70,000 for financing the establishment of a Chair for tolerance and dialogue between religions, in an Andalusian University.

It is also agreed that the Society will allocated $40,000 for financing two feasibility studies for the preparation of two documentary films on centres of cultural influence in Andalusia and the African Sahel, respectively, bearing in mind that these two regions can serve as a model for intellectual and cultural radiance away from violence and confrontation.

Education

In the framework of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Programme, the Society agrees to allocate $70,000 for financing the establishment of a chair in an Afiican University (to be determined later), for teaching Arabic at the University level.

The Society expresses the wish that UNESCO participate in the whole process of establishing and developing the Arab Islamic Cultural Centre, to be built in Kanu (Nigeria). For this purpose, the Society will allocate $250,000.

Science

The Society agrees to allocate the following sums:

$150,000 for financing the preliminary studies for the itinerant exhibition on Islamic science and technology.

$150,000 for financing the digging of wells for drinking water in a number of countries in the African Sahel region.

Information

The Society agrees to collaborate with UNESCO in the production of a documentary film on the co-operation between the two organizations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, this Agreement has been signed in four copies, two in Arabic and two in English, the two texts being equally authentic.
